EXCESSIVE BARKING

The neighbors are complaining that my dog barks all the time. How can I stop this?

Barking is a natural behavior for a dog. So, there is no way that anyone can, or should, stop a dog from barking completely. There are instances, however, when a dog's loud and constant barking becomes a nuisance to her family, as well as everyone else in the neighborhood. In these cases, training can address the issue of excessive barking. Another alternative is to use an anti-bark collar from PSP. There are two kinds of anti-bark collars. The first administers a mild electric correction when it senses a vibration in the dog's vocal cords. Although strong enough to get the dog's attention, the shock from this collar poses no threat to the pet. The second sprays citronella, a safe nontoxic oil, in front of a dog’s face whenever the animal barks. In both cases, the dog learns to associate something negative (a shock or an annoying spray of citronella) with barking, so she stops this behavior.

According to Cornell University, 13-35% of canine behavioral complaints involved nuisance barking. An anti-bark collar should not be left on a pet for more than eight hours a day. Since these collars must fit tightly, wearing them for longer periods can cause skin irritations.

The products carried by PSP in this category include Petsafe Anti-Bark Collars (electric correction) and Multivet (citronella).
