Your dog is probably
showing signs of discomfort because road salt is cutting
into her paw pads. Granules of salt can easily become
embedded in the space between the skin and rub against
the paw pads causing irritations and infections. Later,
when the dog licks her paws to remove the offending
granules, she’s liable to ingest the salt and irritate
the lining of her stomach.
Wash and dry the dog’s
paws after every winter walk. Another more convenient
alternative is to put dog boots on the pet. This will
not only prevent salt from getting into the pads, it
will also keep the dog’s feet dry and warm. Some dogs
may take time to get used to walking with pads on, but
most will adjust to wearing the protective footwear.
