FOOD ALLERGIES

My dog has food allergies.

Food allergies are not uncommon among dogs, accounting for about 10 percent of all reported instances of allergic reactions reported. You should not assume that a dog is "too old" to develop allergies for the first time. There have been cases of allergies suddenly appearing in dogs as old as 12.

Allergies usually build up over a period of time in a dog, as the animal becomes exposed to a particular food ingredient. Depending on what you are currently feeding your pet, switch to a food with a different protein and carbohydrate source.

Most dog foods are made from beef or chicken, plus corn or wheat. In these cases, addressing the dog's food allergy will involve switching the pet to a dog food that uses rabbit, lamb, fish, venison or duck as its protein source, and rice or potato for its carbohydrates.

Although allergies are not uncommon, most dogs never develop them. These pets can continue to eat the same food all their lives without ever becoming allergic to a specific ingredient.
