ITCHY SKIN FROM FOOD ALLERGY

My dog has itchy skin that the vet has diagnosed as a food allergy. What can I feed him?

Whatever food you are currently feeding your pet, find a food with a different source of both protein and carbohydrates. Typically, food allergies are built up over time as an allergic dog becomes more and more exposed to a specific ingredient in your diet. So the best “cure” is to switch the dog to a new type of food. Since most dog foods are made from beef or chicken with corn or wheat, this will mean switching to a rabbit, lamb, fish, venison or duck based dog food with a rice or potato carbohydrate source. This is true only of dogs with a predisposition to food allergies. Non-allergic dogs can continue to eat the same food all their lives without ever developing an allergy.

Approximately 10% of all allergies in dogs are caused by food. The onset of a food allergy can first occur at anytime in a pet’s life; even dogs as old as 12 have developed a food allergy for the first time. Pet owners whose pet may have a food allergy consult a veterinarian.
