HOUSEBREAKING GUIDELINES

How do I housebreak my new puppy?

Aside from a good puppy trainer, you should purchase a crate for the puppy. A crate is an essential housebreaking tool, since puppies have a natural aversion to soiling their personal space. It’s ok to keep a favorite blanket in the crate, but food and water are off limits, since eating and drinking stimulate the urge to “go” in the puppy.

Always remember to remove a puppy’s collar before placing her in a crate, and put it back on as soon as they take her out. Collars and ID tags can become caught on a crate’s bars, choking the puppy. Also, toys that pose a choking problem should never be left in a puppy’s crate.

Leave the puppy in the crate overnight, or whenever she is unsupervised in the house. As soon as the puppy is removed from the crate, she should be taken outside to relieve herself. Praise the puppy lavishly once she has completed her “business” outside. Applying a “potty spray” to a specific area outside will encourage a pet to urinate on that spot. As the puppy becomes more housebroken, she can be left outside her crate unsupervised for longer periods. Even the most trainable puppies will have the occasional accident as they grow up. So, a stain and odor remover formulated for pets is also an essential housebreaking tool.

By eliminating the scent of a pet’s urine or feces from carpet and furniture, these products remove a powerful cue that will trigger a pet to relieve herself. It’s important to keep a supply of stain and odor remover in the house at all times, so accidents can be cleaned up quickly.

Aside from aiding in the housebreaking process, a crate also provides the puppy with a quiet refuge and a greater sense of security. Generally, young puppies should be taken out of their crates to relieve themselves every three hours or so.
