All puppies, even those
who are eventually going to share a bed with their
owners, should start off sleeping in a crate. Putting
the puppy in a crate at night will help ease her
transition into her new home, providing her with an
added sense of security. Put a soft blanket and safe
chew toy in the puppy's sleeping crate, and place the
puppy's crate in the bedroom, rather than a far off
corner of the house.
Putting the puppy's
crate in the bedroom offers several advantages. It helps
to reassure the puppy and strengthen the bond with her
new owner (even as both are sound asleep!) since she'll
be breathing in the scent of her new human companion.
Secondly, sharing a
bedroom with the puppy will help housebreak the pet. You
will be able to hear the puppy and take her outside when
she wakes up in the middle of the night and has to
relieve herself. Of course, always remember to ignore
the whines and whimpers the puppy makes when she's put
in the crate for the first time at night. These usually
subside quickly once the puppy realizes that her pleas
are having no effect on her owners.
