-
Always make sure
collar is working safely prior to putting it on the
dog.
-
All other collars
should be removed from the dog’s neck before the
training collar is put on.
-
The training collar
should not be used as the pet’s everyday collar.
-
Dogs should wear the
training collar for a few hours a day for 7-14 days
before it is used for training. This will get them
accustomed to the idea of the collar.
-
Once the training
sessions begin, the dog should have quiet time with
the collar. The dog should wear the collar for about
a half hour without commands or electronic
corrections being given. This will reduce the
likelihood that the dog will associate the collar
with being responsible for the correction. Dogs that
make this connection may figure out to obey commands
only when wearing the collar.
-
Always start
training sessions with the lowest level of
electronic impulse, increasing it only when
necessary.
-
Keep training
sessions brief (about 10 minutes) and separate them
by 30-minute breaks.
-
Be consistent: once
training sessions with a collar have begun, other
training methods should not be tried. Typically, the
necessary training period with a remote system will
be about four months. During this period, the dog
should always wear the training collar when outside.
-
Training sessions
should always end with lavish praise for the dog.
