Some small dog owners
want to feed their pets dry foods instead of wet or
moist varieties, because it is more economical and
offers additional dental health benefits. (Small breeds
are more prone to dental problems, because their teeth
are thinner and are “packed” more tightly in the mouth.)
Eating dry food removes some plaque from the teeth.
However, some small dogs are reluctant to chew the
harder dry foods.
You can try a small mini
bite-sized variety of dry food. To make the dry food
more palatable, you can moisten the food with water or
apply an appetite enhancing gravy.
Remember that moist and
canned foods both offer a dog complete nutritional
benefit, so a pet that is very reluctant to accept dry
foods can be switched to a moist or canned diet without
suffering nutritional consequences.
