PULLING OUT STITCHES

My dog just had surgery and keeps pulling on his stitches. What should I do?

Licking a wound or pulling out stitches is a natural response to the discomfort a dog feels from these irritations, but when done to excess, it can quickly cause problems. Aside from possibly reopening a wound or incision, licking will increase the risk of an infection. Normal training commands typically won’t work to stop this potentially harmful behavior. The only sure way to keep a dog from licking is to block access to the affected area. This is most often done with an Elizabethan collar.

The neck of an Elizabethan collar should be narrow enough to allow the dog to eat and drink. Most dogs will be wary of an Elizabethan collar, but will accept it eventually. Dogs wearing an Elizabethan collar should not be allowed outside without supervision to reduce the risk of injury since the collar reduces peripheral vision and can become caught in branches or bushes.
