SUBMISSIVE URINATION

Our dog urinates whenever he feels we’re upset with him. How can we stop this?

When they feel threatened or overwhelmed, some dogs will urinate as a way of signaling their subordination. Waving the white flag this way serves a purpose in natural dog packs, since it reduces the likelihood of a fight breaking out, but it has no place in your home.

The first thing you should do is take the dog to the vet to eliminate any underlying medical cause. A trip to a qualified dog trainer may also be a good idea, since this issue can usually be addressed through behavioral modification.

You can help build up the dog’s confidence by allowing him to win gentle games of tug-o-war. Also try to approach the dog calmly from the side, rather than the front, avoid direct eye contact, and spend more time bonding on the same height level as the dog rather than standing over him. Pet the dog by stroking his sides or under his chin, rather than the top of the head, since a submissive dog will often interpret this as a domineering gesture.

When the submissive dog does mark in the house, avoid harsh reprimands, since this will only drive the pet deeper into his shell. The urine should be cleaned up quickly with little fanfare with a product that will eradicate the urine scent so as not to stimulate more urination in the future.
