WINTER COLD

My dog always gets cold when we take him out in the winter. What can I do to help him?

You should get a coat or sweater for your dog. Even large dogs will benefit from this simple, but effective, form of winter protection. Aside from keeping the dog warm, a coat or sweater will provide the added benefit of protecting his underside from salt and chemicals. If your dog resists putting his head through a coat, you could try a garment that fastens quickly around the chest.

It is encouraged to try a coat on your dog, since proper sizing is essential. A coat that is loose fitting will not be as effective at retaining body heat; plus, it will also impede the dog’s mobility.

On the other hand, a coat that’s too tight will not only be uncomfortable, it will also provide inadequate body coverage. When sizing a dog for a coat, measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

Remember to act calm and confident when you first put a coat on you pet. When people are hesitant or nervous about doing something new, the dog is likely to become suspicious and frightened.
