What Are Bully Sticks?

What they’re made of and why they’re good for your pooch.

You may have heard rumors about what goes into making bully sticks, and well…they’re probably true. Traditional bully sticks are made from one single ingredient—the ‘pizzle’ (reproductive organ) of a young bull, or steer.

Now, for a lot of people that might come as a shock—and not necessarily a pleasant one. But keep in mind that bully sticks are one of the most popular dog treats out there, and for many good reasons. Here’s a few of them:

Oral Hygiene

There’s no substitute for your pup’s regular tooth-brushing routine, but you can use bully sticks as a way to help maintain clean teeth. Gum inflammation (periodontal disease) is one of the most common diseases in dogs, and tougher chew treats and toys can help keep it at bay. Bully sticks support healthy teeth and gums because the gnawing motion scrapes away plaque and buildup before it has the chance to stick.

Nutritional Value

Beef is a complete source of amino acids, which supports your dog’s muscles, brain, skin, and coat. If your dog has any allergy or sensitivity, bully sticks are a great option, as most brands are made without artificial chemicals, additives, and preservatives. Just remember to check the label.

Chewing Distraction

Do you find teeth marks on everything in the house that isn’t out of reach? Maybe your pooch loves your favorite shoes even more than you do? Bully sticks are great for dogs who love to chew, as they redirect their focus in a positive way—which might save some of your household items from their playful jaws.

Up-Cycling Waste

Bully sticks take a part of an animal that would otherwise go to landfill—and put it to good use. In the USA around 30,000,000 cows are bred for agriculture each year, which would mean a lot of waste if it wasn’t for the popularity of bully sticks.

Great for All Dogs!

While bully sticks are made from a single ingredient they also come in a variety of sizes, dimensions and flavors, to suit any breed, age, or size of dog. They’re also fine for puppies, as bully sticks won’t splinter—but they do shrink as they’re chewed, so be sure that your pup can safely chew on smaller treats all by themselves.

You can find small, medium and large bully sticks to suit the size of your pooch. Is your dog an aggressive, intense chewer? A braided bully stick will slow them down. Or do they take a long time to chew? Straight, thin sticks are a great choice. There’s also a range of flavors like bacon, chicken and peanut butter—and ‘low-odor’ versions for owners who find them a bit smelly. Try different types and let your pup judge which ones are best!
