Approximately 5 years

AVERAGE SIZE

8-12 inches long (mostly tail)

NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION

Some Grass Lizards can be tamed to sit on the hand, but being out of the cage generally stresses them. Long-Tailed Grass Lizards are very energetic and entertaining to watch in their enclosure. They can be housed together, but males may become aggressive towards one another.

CAGE TEMPERATURE

Day Temps: 75-80°F

Basking Temps: 85-90°F

Night Temps: 65-75°F

HUMIDITY

60-70% humidity levels

FEEDING

Long-Tailed Grass Lizards are completely insectivorous and require a variety of different live foods. Long-Tailed Grass Lizards should be offered varying types of insects to ensure a healthy diet is maintained.

SUPPLEMENTS

Dust food with calcium supplement and vitamin supplements. As a rule, a growing juvenile’s food should be dusted more often than an adult’s.

WATER

A large bowl of clean fresh chlorine-free water must always be available.

ENCLOSURE SIZE

The enclosure should be at least a 20 gallons high or larger for one to two adults. A secure mesh lid is required.

HOUSING & ENVIRONMENT

To regulate their body temperature, both a warm and cool side of the enclosure should be maintained. Long-Tailed Grass Lizards love to climb, therefore their environment should have ample branches and plants to do so.

SUBSTRATE

We recommend a loose coconut fiber substrate.

UVB LIGHT

Exposure to UVB (ultraviolet B) light is CRITICAL in allowing an animal to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin and metabolize calcium in their body.

HABITAT MAINTENANCE

Daily maintenance should consist of spot cleaning by removing soiled substrate, cleaning water bowl thoroughly and wiping glass clean. The entire tank should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every couple months.

RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES

  • 20 Gal high (or larger) reptile tank with very secure clipped mesh top
  • Appropriately sized dome & heat light
  • UVB Bulb & housing
  • Temperature/humidity gauge
  • Coconut fiber substrate
  • Multiple live or artificial plants & branches for climbing and hiding (reptile-safe)
