7 Dog Exercises that Benefit You, Too!

Let's get physical!

Staying healthy and active is a great goal to set for the new year but can be a difficult one to stick to. That’s why we recommend involving a furry friend to keep you motivated!

So instead of hitting the gym solo, try some of these exercises with your dog to help establish those healthy habits:

Trot, Walk, Run

Every dog is different, but a general rule of thumb is to get your dog up and active between 30 minutes to two hours every day. One way to exercise with your dog is by taking them with you for a walk or run. A trip to their favorite dog park, or a walk around the neighborhood can be a great way to get some good exercise. Another fun option to keep things interesting, is to let your dog lead the way and see where the smells of the wind take you!

Become a Stair Master

If you live in a big city or can’t get outside due to the weather, a great indoor activity for you and your dog is to take to the stairs. Walking or running up and down the stairs a few times is sure to get both you and your dog’s hearts pumping. Just remember to take it slow for those pups with shorter legs.

Take a Hike

One of the best things you can do for both you and your dog is to get out into the great outdoors. Hiking trails are more forgiving than pavement on your dog’s feet, not to mention the smorgasbord of sights and smells that will keep them motivated to keep going. However, all that exploring can make a dog thirsty, so make sure to bring plenty of water and treats!

Do the Doggie Paddle

If you’re looking for a way to stay active (and cool) in the heat, consider practicing the doggie-paddle with your pup. While not every dog loves the water, many dogs enjoy the opportunity to take a dip in a pool or at a local dog beach. Swimming is also better for your dog’s paws and joints than running and can be a great option for dogs with conditions like hip dysplasia or bad knees.

Play a Game

Most dogs are easily entertained with a good old fashion game of fetch — but there are plenty of games you can play with your dog to keep things fun and interesting. A game of hide and seek or tug-of-war is fun a fun way to engage with your dog, while promoting light to moderate exercise. Or activate their body and their brain with a treasure hunt — simply hide a few treats or their favorite toy around the house or in the yard and follow them around as they hunt for the hidden treasure.

Practice Doga

Ok, you may be wondering, what in the world is Doga? It’s yoga for your dog! As meditation practices have grown in popularity over the years, including your pets in your yoga flow has become more common. If you want to get in on the fun, check to see if there are any Doga classes offered near you. Ready, set, zen!

Build an Agility Course

An agility course is a great way to help your dog increase their strength, stamina and you guessed it - agility! While agility courses often make us think of professional courses and best-in-show competitions, with a little creativity, you can create your very own obstacle course using everyday items you find outside or around the house. Cheer your pup on as you run alongside them, then see if they can break their record!

These dog exercises are sure to help both you and your pup reach your resolution for a healthier new year! Keep in mind that if your dog is not used to a lot of strenuous activity, you may need to modify these activities to accommodate their level of endurance, and make sure to offer plenty of water, pets and praise along the way!
