Tips to Keep Your Dog Warm in Winter Weather

Brrr-ing on the snow!

Is there a snow day in your future? If you’ve got a winter wonderland coming to your neighborhood, you might be busy stocking up on cocoa must-haves, cozy blankets and candles. While you’re cranking up the thermostat, don’t forget to double check that you have a stock of your pet’s essentials, including food and treats, pet-safe ice melt, outerwear – and the most important must-have – a proactive pet parent!

Always remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet. Check out some of our winter weather tips below to make sure you and your furry friend are prepped before your neighborhood turns into a snow globe.

Must-Haves When You’re Snowed In

Keep this checklist handy to make sure you and your pet are prepped and ready before the next snowmageddon comes to town.

• Food, Treats and Medication
• Training Pads
• Pet Wipes
• Pet Safe Ice Melt
• Paw Wax
• Winter Apparel

Paw Protection

Ice melts that are not pet-safe can be extremely dangerous for your furry friend causing skin and paw pad irritation, gastrointestinal problems if ingested and even chemical burns. Because normal salts can be so hazardous, make sure you have pet-safe ice melts for your sidewalks, driveway and anywhere else you may need. Of course, you can’t be sure what kinds of ice melts your neighbors and local parks are using, so it’s important to keep your pet’s paws wiped clean every time they’re out and about during the winter.

Pet wipes

are convenient and easy to use, especially when you’re on the go. Make sure you thoroughly wipe your pup’s paws to remove any salt, ice and impacted snow. Paw wax is another cold-weather essential that’s great to have on hand when inclement weather is predicted. When applied before romping in the snow and ice, it can keep your dog’s paws from cracking and bleeding. If conditions are especially harsh (and your pup doesn’t mind having things touch their paws), dog snow boots will keep their feet warm and protected for winters to come.

Best Dressed for Winter

We all know that there’s very few things cuter than a pet in a sweater. While adorable and stylish, if you’re facing extreme weather in your neighborhood, to keep your dog warm outside, they might need another layer. Even if your furry friend is only going to do their business outside for a few minutes, a thick, water-resistant dog coat can keep their fur free of snow and ice.
