American Green Tree Frog Care Guide
Did You Know?
- The tiny American Green Tree Frog is considered one of the most beautiful frogs in North America.
- They use their green color as an effective camouflage against predators. Depending on temperature and lighting, they can change colors between dark and light green.
- Green Tree Frogs are active at night, and prefer to climb rather than jump.
- They are the State Amphibian of Georgia and Louisiana.
- A group of frogs is called an “army”
- Frogs don’t drink water, instead they absorb it through their skin.
- The oils on our skin are actually harmful to a Green Tree Frog; minimal touching is necessary.
Species Information
LIFE SPAN
Approximately 4 years
AVERAGE SIZE
4-6 inches
NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION
Tree Frogs are nocturnal. They live in groups and get along well together as long as there is proper space for each frog.
CAGE TEMPERATURE
68-77°F
HUMIDITY
60-70% humidity levels
FEEDING
Tree Frogs are carnivorous (insectivorous) and prefer live food.
SUPPLEMENTS
Dust food with calcium supplement and vitamin supplements. As a rule, a growing juvenile’s food should be dusted more often than an adults.
WATER
All water given to amphibians for bathing, swimming or drinking, as well as water used for misting, must be 100% free of chlorine and heavy metals.
ENCLOSURE SIZE
The enclosure should be a minimum of 4 gallons of tank space per frog. 20 Gal high or other taller tanks are commonly used.
SUBSTRATE FOR LAND AREA
We recommend a loose coconut fiber substrate to help hold humidity.
BRANCHES & PLANTS
Branches and plants must be included in the enclosure to provide sleeping and climbing spots for your Tree Frog. Using live, non toxic plants can help increase and maintain humidities.
UVB LIGHT
Exposure to UVB (ultraviolet B) light is CRITICAL in allowing an animal to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin and metabolize calcium in their body.
DAY/NIGHT CYCLES & HEATING
All amphibians must have distinct day and night periods in their enclosures. Green Tree Frogs need 8-12 hours of daytime and 8-12 hours of nighttime. This can be maintained with a timer.
HABITAT MAINTENANCE
Daily maintenance should consist of spot cleaning by removing soiled substrate, cleaning water bowl thoroughly and wiping glass clean. The entire tank should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every month.
