Fancy Mouse Care Guide
Did You Know?
- A Fancy Mouse (also known as Mus musculus domesticus) enjoys interacting with their pet parents and can even be trained to learn tricks.
- Did you ever wonder why a mouse seems to constantly be on the move? We think their big appetite may have something to do with it! An average mouse eats 15-20 times a day!
- A Mouse tail can grow as long as their entire body.
- Mice use their whiskers to feel surfaces when moving about.
- A Fancy Mouse has the ability to jump up to 1.5 feet.

NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION
Fancy Mice are happiest living in groups of two or more. It is sometimes difficult to introduce new mice to each other, so it is best to purchase them at the same time from the same cage at the pet store. The more you handle and work with your pet, the tamer it will become.
FEEDING
Vegetarians/grain eaters. Commercially prepared mouse diets are available at all pet stores, they are made of pellets, seeds, grains and dried vegetables. Fresh vegetables and fruits may be offered as treats as well.
WATER
Clean, fresh chlorine-free water must always be available. Change it daily.
HOUSING & ENVIRONMENT
Fancy Mice love to exercise and explore so the bigger the habitat the better for your mouse. Plastic and wire cages or glass tanks both make suitable enclosures, but whatever cage you choose, make sure it is secure.
HIDE HOUSE
The hide house is extremely important to Fancy Mice, and will most likely become your pet’s main “bedroom.” Offer at least one to your Fancy Mouse.
BEDDING
We recommend an aspen bedding or soft recycled newspaper bedding.
TOYS
Several types of toys must be available to your Mouse. Chewing toys such as wooden or paper toys, hide houses, wheels and mouse balls are all good options.
HABITAT MAINTENANCE
Daily maintenance should consist of spot cleaning by removing soiled substrate, cleaning water bowls and bottles thoroughly and wiping glass clean. The entire cage should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every week.
GROOMING & HYGIENE
It is not necessary to clean or bathe your Mouse. They are extremely neat and will groom themselves.
