Species Information
LIFE SPAN
12-20 years
AVERAGE SIZE
8-10 inches long
NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION
Marine Toads are nocturnal and have quite bold personalities making them entertaining pets. Handling any frog is very stressful and can cause harm to the animal due to the oils on our skin. Marine Toads can be kept in pairs.
CAGE TEMPERATURE
Day & Night: 70°-78°F
HUMIDITY
60-70% humidity levels
FEEDING
Carnivorous (insectivorous) - live food. Protein sources such as gut-loaded crickets, earthworms, wax worms, roaches and the occasional thawed frozen pinky should be part of their diet.
SUPPLEMENTS
Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements. As a rule, a growing juvenile’s food should be dusted more often than adult food.
WATER
All water given to amphibians for bathing, swimming or drinking, as well as water used for misting, must be 100% free of chlorine and heavy metals.
BRANCHES & PLANTS
Adding live amphibian-safe plants to your Marine Toad’s terrarium can help maintain and increase humidity levels as well as provide ample hiding spots.
ENCLOSURE SIZE
A minimum of a 30 gallon tank is suitable for a Marine Toad. A pair can be kept in a 55 gallon tank successfully.
SUBSTRATE
We recommend a loose coconut fiber substrate and sphagnum moss. These substrates will help hold humidity and allow your Marine Toad to burrow.
DAY/NIGHT CYCLES & HEATING
All amphibians must have distinct day and night periods in their enclosures. Marine Toads need 8-12 hours of daytime and 8-12 hours of nighttime.
HABITAT MAINTENANCE
Daily maintenance should consist of spot cleaning by removing soiled substrate, cleaning water bowl thoroughly and wiping glass clean. The entire tank should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every month.
