Species Information
AVERAGE ADULT SIZE
.5-1.5 inches long depending on species
SWIM LEVEL
Bottom Dweller
NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION
Nano Shrimp are generally docile and do very well in groups. These invertebrates are very active and fun to watch as they make their way around their aquarium. They should only be housed with small peaceful fishes or snails as many fish will eat Nano Shrimp.
Nano Shrimp will often breed once settled into their aquarium, so ample space is ideal for groups as they will quickly multiply.
TANK REQUIREMENTS
3 gallons or more
WATER TEMPERATURE
70°-79°F depending on species
FEEDING
Depending on the species of shrimp, their diet consists of plant based and meaty foods which can be offered in the form of algae wafers, commercial shrimp and bottom feeder diets and leftover foods found along the bottom of the tank. Most aquariums should be offered food twice a day in a quantity that can be completely consumed by its inhabitants within 1-2 minutes. Stock level and types of species may require adjustments to these feeding recommendations.
SUPPLEMENTS
Calcium and trace mineral supplements should be offered to your Nano Shrimp to assist with molting.
ENVIRONMENT
Nano Shrimp can be sensitive to sudden water quality changes and temperatures. Small amounts of ammonia and nitrites can be deadly to Nano Shrimp, so these invertebrates should only be added to an established aquarium. Filters can inadvertently suck up these small invertebrates, so using a filter made for Nano Shrimp, adding coarse foam over your filter inlet or reducing the flow on your filter is needed for the safety of the shrimp. The ideal environment for Nano Shrimp is a heavily planted tank with lots of hiding spots and surfaces to graze for algae and leftover foods.
ACCLIMATING & QUARANTINING NEW FISH
We recommend water acclamation for your Nano Shrimp and all freshwater fish. To achieve this, float the bag containing the new fish in your aquarium for 10 to 15 minutes to equalize temperatures. At this point, you can add small amounts of your tank water to the fish bag every 15 minutes or so 3-4 times. Then, catch your new shrimp or fish out of the bag and release it into your quarantine aquarium.
RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES
- Shrimp-safe filter or coarse filter foam to position over filter inlet
- Commercial shrimp diet, algae wafers or sinking shrimp pellets
- Live aquatic plants and mosses
- Mineral supplements
- Wood or stone to provide hiding places
