NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION
Regal Jumping Spiders are a diurnal species. They are arboreal active hunters that seek out prey items vs building a sticky web and waiting for their food to come to them. They do build hammock webs which are more for safe sleeping or hide spots within the enclosure. Jumping Spiders should be housed alone as they are not social species and will see other spiders as potential food sources.
FEEDING
Carnivorous (insectivorous) - live food. Regal Jumping spiders must be fed tiny insects. Their diet should consist of flightless fruit flies, small crickets, small meal worms and small dubia or discoid roaches. Food items should be no bigger than half the size of your spider and offered 2-3 times a week. A good indication if a Jumping spider is hungry is the size of their abdomen. If you notice your spiders abdomen is looking skinny, they are hungry and it’s time to offer food.
SUPPLEMENTS
Beyond gut loading feeder insects, supplements are not needed for your pet spider.
WATER
All water given to jumping spiders for drinking, as well as water used for misting, must be 100% free of chlorine and heavy metals. Regal Jumping spiders will drink water from droplets inside the enclosure and get water from their prey items. We recommend spraying their enclosure weekly.
ENCLOSURE
Regal Jumping Spiders do not require a lot of space. Small plastic terrariums or micro habitats no larger than 9x9x12 inches in size are ideal to keep your pet in.
SUBSTRATE
We recommend a loose coconut fiber substrate and terrarium moss. This substrate mix will help hold humidity within the enclosure.
BRANCHES & PLANTS
Branches and plants must be included in the enclosure to provide sleeping and climbing spots for your spider. Pieces of wood like spider wood or cork barks also work well for climbing mediums.
SHEDDING
Jumping Spiders need good humidity in their habitats in order to molt properly. If the humidity is not adequate, your pet may not be able to shed completely, which can be deadly. If you notice your jumping spider is dull in color, less active than normal or not eating as often, it may be getting ready to molt. Remove uneaten prey items as they could injure your spider during it’s molt and ensure humidity is at the high end of 70% for a successful molt. Juvenile spiders will molt much more often than adults.
DAY/NIGHT LIGHT CYCLES & HEATING
All jumping spiders must have distinct day and night periods in their enclosures. Provide your jumping spider with 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. LED lights make an easy light source for small terrariums. If a heat source is needed, utilize a small heat pad to avoid melting their plastic enclosure.
HABITAT MAINTENANCE
Removing boluses (uneaten insect parts) regularly is needed to prevent mold and bacteria growth inside your enclosure. Regular cleanings are not recommended for spider enclosures as this can cause a lot of stress to your pet. Replace bedding and enclosure items as needed if mold or algae forms or habitat items become damaged.
